Indirect Object

The indirect object usually follows the main verb (when this verb is an action verb) in the sentence. It is usually the recipient of the action initiated by the subject.

The easiest way to identify the direct object is by seeing what word(s) answer the question "whom?" after the main verb. For example,

main verb whom?

The indirect object can be a person's name:

The magician gave Lefty the sign to make a face at the crowd.

gave whom? Lefty

The indirect object can be a pronoun (always the object case):

Brushing my teeth takes me five minutes when I'm hung over.

gave whom? me
